Types of Deafness

Deafness ranges from mild to profound and is caused by many different ways. This section will help to give you a clearer understanding of the differences.

Deaf Culture

Deaf community and Deaf culture are phrases used to refer to people who are culturally deaf as opposed to those who are deaf from medical/audiological perspective. The word ‘Deaf’ is very often capitalised in writing when used in the cultural sense.

Communication

Deaf and hearing people communicate using one, some or all of the methods described in this section. We encourage individuals to learn as much as they can about each method of communication.

Support

There are groups and organisations throughout Queensland that provide valuable support to people who are deaf and hard of hearing and their families.
