Our Community Service supports Deaf and hard of hearing members of the community and their families. A team of qualified community workers who are bi-lingual in Auslan and English who:
work directly with Deaf individuals and families to facilitate access to government and community agencies
assist Deaf people, their families and external organisations
provide a 'Walk in' Service
conduct Australian Sign Language (Auslan) and Baby Sign Classes
promote understanding of deafness through Deafness Awareness Training for corporate, government and community organisations
lobby for the development of programs to meet community needs
Deaf people can meet with an experienced Community Worker to talk about what they want or need on a face-to-face basis during allocated times in our offices around the State.
By learning the fundamentals of Auslan in our fun and interactive classes, you will be able to share the language with others and ultimately communicate with Deaf people who use Auslan as their preferred language.
Attending a six (6) week Baby Sign class can give parents and care givers skills to connect in a meaningful way with their baby or toddler using basic key word signs. Children between the ages of 2 months and 5 years who are hearing or deaf and their carers can attend the class.
By holding a Deafness Awareness Training session, organisations and community groups deepen their understanding of some key issues relating to deafness and Deaf culture, and communicating with deaf people.
Our Deaf Youth Service aims to ensure equality of opportunity for all young deaf people and assist them to achieve their potential as empowered individuals through access, information, advocacy and education.
The community education program is designed to enhance knowledge and skills of Deaf people, supporting them in life long learning and independent living. Workshops are for any deaf or hard of hearing people. Communication access provided through Auslan interpreters.
